In the heart of Friuli's Oriental Hills

With a light heart and curious mind, we invite you to indulge in the gentle succession of hills and the infinite shades of green that draw the landscape of the Eastern Hills, Colli Orientali. To characterize the panorama of this territory, in addition to the neat vineyards, small valleys, short and lively streams, we also find chestnuts, wild cherry trees, oaks and maples, last standing witnesses of the ancient woods that in past centuries occupied these lands, before they became famous for their wine production, but are still preserved with care, since these trees now make a difference in the quality of our region’s wine.

Incredibly suitable to viticulture, the soil of this area is made of layers of rocks derived from sediments of what was anciently the seabed, alternating and interpenetrating with softer layers of marne (called ponca) and layers of sandstone, of more solid and darker shades, which with their disphagly contribute to create the wonderful soil, in which the roots of the vineyards, the so-called Flysch, drown.

Thanks to this very rich and unique soil, to the favorable exposure of the vineyards to sunlight and to the infinite variety of microclimates, the range of vines that are cultivated in these areas is very wide.

The native vines of Pignolo, Picolit, Friulano, Malvasia, are joined by Ribolla Gialla and Schippettino, not forgetting the international varieties that arrived in Friuli around the 19th century, such as Sauvignon, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon.

The landscape is a succession of terraced hills, protected by the dazzling green of the Eastern Alps and tempered by the breezes of the nearby Adriatic Sea.

Since 1922 the Ermacora family has been passionately dedicated to the art of viticulture. On 70 hectares they cultivate twelve types of vines, dedicating themselves with passion to the preservation of native varieties. They protect their vineyards by taking care of the biodiversity provided by 30 hectares of woods. For 4 generations, harvest after harvest, they followed the rhythms of nature as to ensure that each bottle of wine meets the quality standards telling the story of our territory. The Ermacora brand is synonymous with high quality thanks to balanced wines of great character. Their dream is to produce wines that are a genuine expression of the values of this territory, which are considered to be precious gifts for the future generations.

Thanks to a deliberately contained production, manual settings and the use of modern winemaking technologies, the viticulture of the Eastern Hills has been greatly enhanced, continuing a modern path of development and expansion that began in 1970 with the receipt of the DOC brand for "Friuli Colli Orientali" wines.

The Colli Orientali are an open-air palette of colors, where the vineyards are the main attraction. Depending on the season, their color is different. The thin and dark ideograms drawn by the branches of the vines during winter season gives way, during the summer, to different shades of green, which gradually become more intense as the small vine leaves grow to shade the delicate bunches that are forming. However, autumn is by far the winner. During this season, the landscape is colored by multiple shades of red, orange and brown and creating beautiful waves of colour.

Here in Cividale you can begin your journey to discover our little corner of the world, where mountains meet the sea and where, despite what is told in the legends that describe the people from Friuli as tough and strict, local people are gentle and will open their hearts, especially when sharing a nice glass of wine.
