Canussio Castle

Walking through the streets of the city you will surely come across the Palazzo or Castello Creiger, it stands in via Nicolò Canussio, along the line marked by the second ring of the city walls from the Roman and late ancient times. On the site there was the Palazzo dei nobili Canussio (whose layout seems to date back to the end of the fourteenth century), lords who in the nineteenth century ceded the property to the Austrian baron Creiger. The latter transforms and expands the building according to a particular neo-Gothic eclectic taste. The complex, very articulated, is characterized by the stratification of elements dating back to different historical periods and by the series of crenelated turrets of different heights. Archaeological investigations carried out during the recent restoration (1991-1992) have brought to light interesting Roman, late antique and medieval structures, in particular a mighty wall of 2.40 meters, with polygonal fortified structures, which in the internal part of the building seems pertinent to the second Roman wall circle of Cividale, then reinforced in the following period.
